Reading 03

Reflection

For this week's reading task, the lecturer instructed us to set up our research about the topic we will be writing about for our project. We are going to have to create annotated bibliographies for 3 articles, books or documents we have found as well as a short summary about them. I found this to be quite difficult because there aren't that many articles to find and there isn't that many that relate to the topic I'm writing about which is the evolution of multiplayer/ the history of multiplayer gaming. I tried putting in as many keywords down as much as I can think of and there hasn't been that much luck.  But I did come across a few good articles that somewhat relate to the topic I am researching.

The evolution of Multiplayer is a topic that not many people had written about, it is usually of topics talking about the social aspect, the esports industry and the technical aspects. I did not find anything that wrote about the history of multiplayer or multiplayer gaming. But I did find a very informative youtube video that I found from the online library and it is called "the history of multiplayer in gaming" and it's from a youtube channel named "Logitech G".

The Documents I read

The first document I have found was a video called "A History of Multiplayer in Gaming" by a channel called Logitech G. This video is about 13 minutes long. I have watched the whole video and it gave me some very informative information that I can use for my project.

The second document I found was a PDF article called "Multiplayer Serious Games" by Viktor Wendel and Johannes Konert.  This article was about 31 pages long and I only skimmed through a few headings in the whole article.

The third document I found was a PDF presentation and is called "Evolution of Multiplayer" by Rocky Forehand, Ben Bricker,Nate Niederkorn, Jared Hagans, Ian Freshwater, Jacob Grealy.   This presentation is about 81 slides long I read through the whole presentation and I obtained a really good knowledge of the different modes of multiplayer, the different eras and gameplay aspects.

Annotated Bibliographies

Logitech, G. (2018) A History of Multiplayer Gaming.

This video goes through a history of multiplayer dating all the way back to the 1950s where you can play a game of tennis against a person on an oscilloscope to playing on a LAN server in the 90s on Quake or Doom and this is where the internet started to become a thing, to today where you can play with millions of people around the world in FPS games, MMORPGs, and sports games etc.

Rocky Forehand Ben Bricker Nate Niederkorn Jared Hagans Ian Freshwater Jacob Grealy (2014) Evolution of Multiplayer.

In this presentation, they talk about the history of multiplayer which goes from Non-Networked multiplayer games such as arcade games in the 1970s  like Computer Space in 1971 which consists of 2 players taking turns to play. Pong in 1972 and this is where multiplayer gaming was born where 2 people can play at the same time. They talk about the Golden age of gaming in the 1980s and 1990s that consisted of split-screen gaming that can be up to 4 players playing at the same time. They also talk about different modes like Seamless Multiplayer, Passive Multiplayer, Wireless Multiplayer and Goalless Multiplayer. Towards the end, they talk about online multiplayer gaming and Asymmetrical Gameplay which defines it as a form of multiplayer in video games in which loads of players can play the same game together in different ways.

Wendel, V. and Konert, J. (2016) 'Multiplayer Serious Games' In Serious Games, Anonymous: Springer, 211-241.

This article goes over the topic of multiplayer serious games. They break the article down in terms of different game types, forms, genres and techniques that can be used for a variety of serious game purposes. They also go over what is competitive multiplayer, co-operative multiplayer and collaborative multiplayer. Expanding on multiplayer types, they also go over the topic of collaborative learning in multiplayer games.

Unity Tutorial 04 (Ruby's 2D Adventure)

Unity Tutorial 04 (Ruby's 2D Adventure) In this tutorial, I learned how to add sprite animation to my characters so that it gives my characters the ability to move their arms and legs to make them more realistic and I also learned how to fire projectiles at enemy characters to kill and stop them from moving and affecting Ruby.  I learned how to use the animation window, this was the first time I had ever used the animation window it was all new to me, I was just playing around with it at first to get used to the controls. I found some difficulties in trying to get the projectiles to actually shoot, I thought for some time the code was perfect. I put in the code the right way but when I did that, every time I tried to shoot the projectiles the game suddenly freezes which was a problem for about an hour. But I finally fixed it since there was a tiny bit of code misspelt. That was the first problem I had making this game. The things I want to learn in the next tutorial are lear...

Alpha

Alpha  This is my progress, I have updated the HUD and I added a few more features in the environment What is going good? So far so good, the game is coming along well. There are a few scripts I put in such as collecting coins, player movement, environment design, generating random levels and level boundaries.  The Technical Difficulties  But there are a few technical difficulties I am going through which is every time I try to put a rigid body component into my player when I added the jump feature into my player controller script, the player for some reason falls through the map and I tried many times trying to fix the issue but I will try my very hardest to fix it. I also need to add in collision detection with the obstacles and when the player does collide with one of the obstacles it will say game over and you have to restart again. Those are some of the difficulties I am facing, I will try and reach my lecturer or one of my peers in class to see if they know t...

I also love going out with my friends but now I am starting to go back out again since the pandemic had closed everything before but now everything is coming back to normal slowly but surely. When I'm bored I like to head on Photoshop and Illustrator and just make whatever comes in my mind.  https://pxhere.com/en/photo/1621191 Favourite Foods...
